I work with RIT's engineering laboratory courses, where students use instrumentation, LabVIEW, Excel, and physical experiments to investigate mechanical engineering principles.
What I Did
My role combines helping students during experiments with developing and troubleshooting laboratory software and equipment. I also work with faculty on new experiments before they are introduced in class.
Main Results
I've supported more than 35 students, developed LabVIEW code for laboratory activities, and helped build electrical and data-acquisition setups for new instructional projects.
Technical Skills
Software
LabVIEW, NI DAQ, Advanced Excel
Instrumentation
Sensors, signal acquisition, calibration, laboratory wiring
Support student experiments involving centrifugal pumps, heat transfer, mechanical vibrations, and engineering measurements.
Explain experimental procedures, engineering calculations, uncertainty analysis, and differences between theoretical and measured results.
Teach students how to analyze and present data using Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, graphs, and regression.
Technical Support & Grading
Help students troubleshoot LabVIEW programs, equipment connections, and unexpected sensor measurements.
Evaluate laboratory reports for accurate calculations, data presentation, uncertainty analysis, and the quality of engineering conclusions.
Work with faculty to improve laboratory instructions and address recurring issues.
Initiatives
01
Developing software for new laboratory projects
Need
Faculty were developing new experiments that required software to collect and process measurements.
My contribution
I worked on LabVIEW code based on the intended experiment, connecting the software with the measurement requirements and hardware configuration.
Outcome
Contributed to developing and testing software for new instructional laboratory setups.
02
Building the physical electrical systems
Need
The proposed experiments also required working circuits, wiring, and data-acquisition equipment.
My contribution
I helped assemble the electrical setups, connect measurement hardware, and troubleshoot software-hardware communication.
Outcome
Supported the development of physical laboratory setups that could be tested before student use.
Results
Supported 35+ students
Contributed to the development of new LabVIEW-based experiments
Built and troubleshot electrical and measurement setups
Evaluated student engineering reports and experimental calculations
Lessons Learned
Working as a TA has made me better at explaining technical concepts and identifying where someone is getting stuck. It has also reminded me how important it is to understand a system before troubleshooting it.
Developing new experiments has been especially useful because I get to work on both the code and the physical hardware rather than treating them as separate problems.
