Assistive Device for Visually Impaired Users

September 2026 – Present

Overview

Premise

Developing an assistive device for blind and visually impaired users that considers obstacle detection, user feedback, comfort, and safety.

What I’m Doing

I'm working on component selection and mechanical design, comparing sensor technologies and feedback options while developing CAD concepts for their integration into a practical device.

Current Progress

Sensor and feedback evaluation, mechanical design development, and prototype and testing planning are ongoing.

Skills

  • CAD Modeling
  • Mechanical Design
  • Sensor Evaluation
  • Electronics Integration
  • Ergonomics
  • Component Selection
  • Budget Planning
  • Safety Considerations

My Role

  • Investigate speaker and haptic feedback options, considering the usefulness of different alerts and their effect on environmental awareness.
  • Develop ergonomic CAD components and enclosure concepts, considering device size, weight, user comfort, component placement, and assembly.
  • Consider how sensors, feedback components, and electrical hardware will fit into the same physical design.
  • Coordinate design decisions, project milestones, budget considerations, and prototype planning with the team.

Accomplishments & Current Work

  • Established engineering considerations for sensor selection, feedback, and mechanical integration.
  • Developed component comparisons to guide design decisions.
  • Continued work on the mechanical design and plans for evaluating device reliability and safety.
