Hydroponic System

September 2024 – September 2025

Overview

Premise

Develop a hydroponic structure and water-distribution concept that could support plant growth while remaining practical to build, maintain, and operate within a limited budget.

What I Did

I led the mechanical design work, developed CAD models and drawings, performed fluid-system calculations, compared equipment and material options, and coordinated a team of ten students.

Results

The project produced eight CAD models for a 12 ft × 6 ft structure and design changes that reduced projected system costs by 30%.

  • Team Leadership

My Role

  • Led the design of the hydroponic structure and fluid-delivery layout.
  • Created eight CAD models and engineering drawings covering structural components, dimensions, assembly, and tolerances.
  • Calculated required flow rates, pressure losses, Reynolds numbers, and pump-head requirements to evaluate pump and piping options.
  • Compared structural materials, component arrangements, and supplier prices based on performance and cost.
  • Organized technical assignments, design reviews, and project meetings for a ten-member engineering team.
  • Managed cost estimates and supporting documentation within an approximate $1,500 budget.

Accomplishments

  • 8 CAD models developed.
  • 30% reduction in projected system cost.
  • 10-person team coordinated.
  • Design and planning work completed within a $1,500 budget.
